WHAT WE BELIEVE

About              WOL Staff         Leadership Team      Our Beliefs

THE WORD OF GOD

We believe in the Old Testament and New Testament Scriptures as the Word of God, inerrant in its original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of man, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and our final authority in all matters of faith and conduct. (II Tim. 3:16-17, II Peter 1:21)

TRINITY

We believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing In three Persons, that these are equal in every Divine perfection, and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of Creation, Providence and Redemption. (Deut. 6:4; II Cor. 13:14)

GOD THE FATHER

We believe In God the Father, an infinite, personal Spirit (Being), perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love (John 4:24). We believe that He created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 1:1)  We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ (Isa. 44:6; II Cor. 1:3; John 14:24).

JESUS CHRIST

We believe in Jesus Christ as the eternal Son of God, begotten by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary to be both the perfect Man and the true God (Luke 1:30—28); that He died for the sins of all men as a substitutionary sacrifice (Heb. 10:10-14;I Peter 1:18 - 23); and that all who believe in Him are justified before God on His merit alone. We believe in the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ (I Cor. 15:3,4), His ascension into heaven (Acts 1:9 - 11), and His present position as our intercessor before the Father (Rom. 8:34).

HOLY SPIRIT

We believe the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ (John 15:26; 16:14). He is a person who convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16:8). In the present age He regenerates believers in Christ, baptizes them into the church, the body of Christ (I Cor. 12:13), indwells them (John 14:16), seals them unto the day of redemption (Eph. 4:30), bestows spiritual gifts upon each one and fills and empowers for service and godly living those yielded to Him (I Cor. 12:4-11; Eph. 5:18; Acts 1:8).

SATAN

We believe that Satan is a real and supernatural personality, the enemy of God and all Good (Matt. 4:1-11), that he was cast out of heaven with his angels (Isa. 14:12-17); his final doom is hell (Rev. 20:7-10); and that he is to be resisted by the believers on the basis of victory procured by Christ on the cross (James 4:7).

DEPRAVITY OF MAN

We believe that man, a living soul, was created perfect in the image of God (Gen. 1:26,27), that he voluntarily and consciously transgressed God’s command (Gen. 3:3—6), and that as a result, sin was imputed to the entire human race (Rom. 5:12), so that all men are born with a sinful nature and face Just condemnation by God (Rom. 5:18).

REGENERATION

We believe that all who repent of their sin and by faith receive Jesus Christ and His atoning work as effectual for themselves (Acts 3:19; John 1:12) become partakers of the Holy Spirit and the divine nature in the new birth (II Peter 1:4; John 3:3-8), receive forgiveness of sins, justification by faith, and adoption into the family of God (Rom. 3:24;

Eph. 1:7; 1 John 3:2).

THE CHURCH

We believe in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the Head and all regenerated persons are members. We believe in the local church, consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized upon the profession of faith, and associated for worship, work, and fellowship (Acts 2:41,47; Col. 1:18). We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local church the primary task of giving the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost world (Matt. 2:19, 20; Eph. 1:22,23).

CHRISTIAN CONDUCT

We believe that a Christian should live for the glory of God and the wellbeing of his fellow men; that his conduct should be blameless before the world; that he should be a faithful steward of his possessions; that he should seek to realize for himself and others the full stature of maturity in Christ

(I Cor. 10:23,31; 6:19 - 20; II Cor. 6:14 - 18; II Peter 3:14; I Peter 2:9 - 20).

THE ORDINANCES

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has committed two ordinances to the local church: (1) Water baptism and (2) The Lord’s Supper. We believe that in Christian baptism a believer identifies himself with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, and so declares his faith in the finished work of Christ (Believer’s Baptism) (Matt. 26:26 - 29; 28:19; Rom. 6:1 -11). We teach and practice immersion but recognize other modes as well. We believe that the Lord’s Supper was instituted by Christ for commemoration of His death, and remembrance of His return (I Cor. 11:23 - 24; Acts 2:38). We believe that the two ordinances should be observed and administered until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

 MARRIAGE & FAMILY

We believe the Bible teaches that marriage refers to the covenant relationship between one man and one woman, as instituted by God in the beginning, to the exclusion of all others (Genesis 2: 20b-24). We affirm the family as the basic unit of society and seek to preserve its integrity and stability (Genesis 2: 21-25; Ephesians 6:1-4).

THE LAST THINGS

We believe in the personal, bodily pre-millennial, and imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and that this “Blessed Hope” has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer (I Thess. 1:9,10; 4:13 - 18).

We believe that the soul of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do at death immediately pass into His presence, and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and body reunited shall be with Him forever in glory (Luke 16:19 - 26; 23:43; II Cor. 5:8; Phil. 1:23), but the soul of unbelievers remain after death in conscious misery until the final Judgment of the great white throne at the close of the millennium, when soul and body reunited shall be cast into the Lake of Fire, not to be annihilated, but to be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power (II Thes. 1:7 - 9; Rev. 20:11 - 15).

SALVATION

We believe that since Jesus Christ has atoned for all sin by His death, all people may now be saved by grace through faith in Him.  We believe that faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to have a personal relationship with the Father and spend eternity with Him.  (Ephesians 2:1 – 10; Romans 6:23; John 3:16).

CREATION

We believe God created everything as revealed in Scripture.  (Genesis 1:1 – 31; Revelation 4:11).
